Android Canvas Example with source code
Author : Ishtek

Using Android API Level : 7
In this example we shall see a very simple ways to work with
Canvas from Android platform and I have used Canvas API from Android Platform.

While working with Canvas API from Android Platform, it is generally the
onDraw method of the View that takes an instance of Canvas as argument.
If it comes to customizing look and feel of any view or UI component, then
an overriden onDraw(Canvas ) methods can be used. Let us take a very simple
example as follows:

In this example we shall draw some shape like an arc/circle/roundrect/line etc.
by utilizing onDraw(Canvas) method of a customized Button class.

activity_main.xml
The main activity layout configuration file is as follows:

<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" > <com.example.democanvas.CustomDrawing android:id="@+id/customDraw" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="#FFFFFF" /> </RelativeLayout>
The MainActivity class file does nothing but sets the activity_main layout XML to the Activity's content view. MainActivity.java
package com.example.democanvas; import android.os.Bundle; import android.app.Activity; import android.view.Menu; public class MainActivity extends Activity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_main); } @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.activity_main, menu); return true; } }
The class file that uses Canvas api to draw a green color filled-circle is as follows: CustomDrawing.java
/** * This code is provided on "AS IS" basis without guarantee/warranty * of any kind. Use of this code subjected to user's own risk. * @Author: Ishtek at usingframeworks@gmail.com * @Date : 27th Feb 2013. */ package com.example.democanvas; import android.content.Context; import android.graphics.Canvas; import android.graphics.Color; import android.graphics.Paint; import android.util.AttributeSet; import android.view.SurfaceView; public class CustomDrawing extends SurfaceView { public CustomDrawing(Context context) { super(context); } public CustomDrawing(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) { super(context, attrs); } public CustomDrawing(Context context, AttributeSet attrs, int defStyle) { super(context, attrs, defStyle); } @Override public void onDraw(Canvas canvas) { Paint paint = new Paint(); paint.setColor(Color.GREEN); canvas.drawCircle(40, 40, 30, paint); } }
On running this example, the final screen on Android Emulator, looks like as follows:
